Colorado band Less Than Perfect combine chunky riffs, searing solos and engaging vocals in a high-energy rock meets metal sound that they describe as “inspiring, passionate and memorable.”
The Parker band began in 2022 when longtime friends Andrew Matson (guitar) and Denny Underwood (bass) finally made their jamming dream a reality. They soon discovered the perfect drummer in Chris Van Meter and added the vocals of Kyra Matson, who’s Andrew’s youngest daughter, to put the final pieces in place.
On the sound they’ve crafted since, Andrew told us: “Each of us brings unique experiences, and we’re dedicated to creating music that moves people. Our sound is a fusion of rock, metal, passion, energy, and a positive message. It’s the kind of music that makes you feel alive—dynamic rhythms, searing guitar solos, and vocals that hit you right in the soul.”
The band sent us Take It All, the second in a series of seven singles released last year. It opens up with a lively stabbing guitar over rolling drums, which drops into a soothing verse supported by piano and light drums. The vocals and drums intensify and stabbing guitars come in as it builds up to an engaging chorus. A heavier second verse gives way to a powerful chorus, which drops into a huge guitar solo. The pace drops with the piano returning to lead another laid-back verse, which picks up pace to a powerful conclusion.
On the track, Andrew told us: “The response to Take It All has been incredible! Listeners have connected deeply with its raw energy and message. For anyone who hasn’t heard it yet, expect a driving anthem filled with powerful riffs, memorable vocals, and thought-provoking lyrics.”
As mentioned, that follows a series of singles last year, which includes a few reworks of tracks on their 2023 debut EP Progress, like the groovy most recent release Choices XL, the encapsulating personal favourite Man In The Mask and the funky Sunshine. If you love a good rock ballad, then check out the delicious Set Fire To The Rain, while the groovy Habitual packs heavy riffs and powerful vocals.
The Less Than Perfect has been shaped by the “electrifying performances and timeless sound” of legends like Van Halen, Metallica, and Black Sabbath and newer bands like Evanescence, Within Temptation, and Lacuna Coil.
And on what inspires them to write music, Andrew explained: “We’re inspired by life’s challenges and triumphs – the moments that move you, test you, and ultimately shape you. Our songs explore themes like redemption, resilience, and finding strength through adversity. We aim to create music that sparks conversations and lifts spirits.”
2025 promises to be a big year for Less Than Perfect, with their second album almost ready to be released and exciting shows in the calendar, including a night at Whisky a GoGo in California. The band is always writing and recording, so expect more new music and gigs very shortly.
And Andrew added: “Less Than Perfect isn’t just a band – it’s a testament to the power of dreams, resilience, and hope. Our music is for anyone who’s faced challenges and come out stronger, and we’re here to remind you that it’s never too late to rewrite your story.”
