From the first moment you listen to the chugging riffs of Dutch metalcore band Out Comes The Storm, you can’t help but be gripped on an engaging sound that they describe as “heavy, melodic and energetic.”
The band originally formed in 2008, making a mark on the Dutch underground metal scene, releasing a self-titled EP, and sharing stages with the likes of Blind Sight, Sworn Enemy, Wasted Bullet and Enemy Ground. But they disbanded in 2010 as their drummer emigrated to Ireland and the band members pursued their own musical paths.
Fast forward 12 years, and the band’s bassist uploaded the original EP, which reignited his fellow members’ passion for the band. The modern approach to making music worked wonders, enabling them to swap weekly rehearsals in a practice room for working individually from home at their own pace. “This fresh perspective revitalized our creativity,” Rob van Gils told us. “After more than a decade of silence, we reunited with renewed energy, crafting new material and refining our sound.”
And on the sound that Out Comes The Storm have crafted, Rob told us: “A powerful fusion of crushing heavy riffs and soaring melodic guitar work, deeply rooted in both classic and modern metalcore influences.”
The band’s reformation has seen them re-record their debut EP, of which the first taster we have is My Church, which was released at the end of last month. It opens up with a little drum roll that sets up a delicious chugging riff that continues under engaging shouted vocals. A little guitar flurry tees up high-pitched guitars amid dual shouted and clean vocals. The vocals intensify alongside relentless riffs, then picking up pace with driving drums and a stabbing riff before flowing into a chorus of big engaging vocals, as the track builds in atmosphere with cool drawn-out, high-pitched guitars. Chugging guitars and big crashing cymbals take over, setting up a heavy outro.
On the track, Rob said: “The latest single, My Church, serves as the first introduction to the upcoming EP, where it stands as one of the calmer tracks. It carries a steady drive, is rhythmically solid, and creates an immersive, atmospheric vibe. The song is melody-driven, complemented by raw and intense vocals.” You can check out the track in the stream preview here:
To get more of a taste for what to expect from the band, you can also listen to No Despair, which was released in 2022. It opens up with drawn-out guitars and intense rolling drums before flying into a breakneck opening verse, which flows into a delicious melodic chorus. A second verse drops into chugging guitars and heavy cries of “I will not despair,” before a spinning guitar note gives way to spoken vocals that tee up a conclusion of chugging guitars. The Out Comes The Storm sound has been influenced by metal greats like Metallica, Killswitch Engage and Ringworm. And on what inspires them to write music, Rob told us: “Out Comes The Storm is back with a refined yet still aggressive sound. While staying true to our underground metalcore roots, we are bringing fresh energy to the scene. Our music channels intense energy, raw emotion, and heaviness, often reflecting themes of personal struggle, resilience, and the depth of human emotion.
As mentioned, Out Comes The Storm have re-recorded their original EP, which is set for release in 2025 and from which My Church is the first single. And based on that first single, we’re excited to hear what’s coming our way with the reworked EP.
