Introducing: HoneyBombs

Italian hard rock band HoneyBombs formed through a shared desire to recreate a modern version of 80s melodic heavy metal with ironical lyrics. However, the band is very much in a transitionary period towards an approach they describe as “melodic speed heavy metal.”

The new HoneyBombs sound is heavier and more powerful with more serious lyrics. The band, formed of Andrew Skid (vocals and keyboards), Alex Rotten and Dottor Gain (guitars and backing vocals), Luke Vanilla (bass and backing vocals) and Andrea Pro (drums), combines engaging speed metal with the occasional “intense ballad” thrown in for good measure.

As the band explains: “The HoneyBombs sound is a mix of catchy melody, heavy riffs and rhythms and intense vocals. That’s combined with synth programming and orchestrations, which are made for creating background textures and pads. We have spent a lot of time writing and arranging songs, especially for the chorus parts.”

Our first taste of this new sound is Berserk, which was released earlier this month. It opens up with a little trumpet intro giving way to chugging guitars, fast-paced drums and synths, before a spinning little guitar lick feeds into atmospheric instrumentals. Engaging vocals take over, supported by chugging guitar chords that gradually intensify towards a big singalong chorus. The spinning riff returns and gives way to another building verse, which ends with high-pitched vocals that feed into a chorus. The second chorus ends with heavy guitars and drums, which give way to a spinning guitar note and synths setting up a guitar solo that continues into a big final blast of the chorus, before ending with another solo and heavier guitar chords.

On the track, the band told us: “Berserk is the first single of the forthcoming album, which will be released on March 14. We think the single will show people who already know who we are that HoneyBombs has changed, becoming a better band than before. For people that don’t know who we are, Berserk is a preview of what to expect from the album entitled There Is An Elephant In The Room… 15 songs between powerful speed metal and some intense ballads.”

The HoneyBombs sound has been influenced by bands like Helloween, Skid Row, Iron Maiden, In Flames, Stratovarius, Symphony X, as well as Hardcore Superstar or The Hellacopters – a band I loved when I was first getting into rock and metal.

And on what inspires them to write music, the band told us: “This is a concept album. There Is An Elephant In The Room tells a story of internal annihilation, where the deepest part of the soul screams out loud at the individual who wanted to silence it from the outside. But this is not a pessimistic point of view. There is a light at the end of the tunnel.”

HoneyBombs will release their new album There Is An Elephant In The Room on 14 March through Italian label Underground Symphony Records. The band will also be performing the album at gigs and festivals, so keep an eye out for them.

The band added: “We are ready to spring out our proposal we know will be appreciated by many people. We are proud of our product. We are very eager for people to listen to our new album, because we know it’s a very good album.”
