British newcomers DETH ATLAS aim to offer a homage to classic metalcore in a hard-hitting sound that they describe as “catchy, heavy and energetic.”
The Brighton band began when guitarist Dean Theodosiou went in search of band members after writing a number of songs. He’d previously worked with vocalist Greg Knoll and they’d kept in touch over the years, so Greg was the first person he messaged. They started working together as a two-piece in the hope that their songs would attract other members, and it worked as they expanded to a five-piece towards the end of last year.
And on the sound they’ve crafted since, Dean told us: “A bit of a homage to classic metal core if we’re honest, catchy, heavy and will definitely get your head bopping. It’s got attitude, you know, especially in the fast delivery of the vocals.”
To give us a taste for this, the band sent us Artorias, the final track from their debut EP Resilience, released at the end of last month. The track starts out with light dreamy guitar and synths, before exploding into life with vicious vocals over stabbing guitars and driving chords. That feeds into a big chorus led by the engaging clean vocals “I’m unsanctified yeah, And I’m scared and blinded, Walk on coal, I feel for you, Walk and call out, Hear no truth.” The pace drops through a verse of intense vocals, before a cool section of clean vocals and driving guitars, which builds towards two renditions of the catchy chorus. The intensity steps up a notch with vicious vocals, huge low-tuned guitars and powerful drums, before fading into a mellow instrumental section that brings the EP to a calm conclusion.
On the track, Dean told us: “Expect to have the chorus stuck in your heads. The reception has been warm and positive to both the video and the EP release itself. It’s been really motivational to see everyone’s reactions.”
The EP starts off with title track Resilience, a laid-back intro that ends with heavy guitars that feed into debut single Turn Away. That opens up with delicious stabbing guitars and feed into intense screamed vocals. The pace picks up with a huge driving riff and fast-paced vocals that are guaranteed to get your head bouncing before a big catchy chorus. A filthy bouncy riff comes in before a chorus and a brutal outro.
There’s plenty more where that came from on Hindsight, which features an unusual but interesting chorus alongside some brutal riffs and vocals, and the powerful Self Sabotage, which you can check out below.
On the EP, Dean said: “It feels like a massive relief to finally have the EP out. It’s been a long journey as we’ve had many unexpected setbacks along the way, one of which was a surgery needed by Greg. But we had to dig deep and overcome these obstacles to get the EP finished. This is the reason why we named it Resilience, it just fit and it’s exactly what we needed to bring this into the world.”
The DETH ATLAS sound has been inspired by bands like Counterparts, Wage War, Bring Me The Horizon, Northlane,Trivium and Destrage. And on what inspires them to write music, Dean told us: “I guess personal experience really. Using Self Sabotage as an example, it’s a bit of a draw on personal experience, and my struggles with mental health over the years.”
There’s plenty more to come from DETH ATLAS, who are actively adding to their unreleased back catalogue of songs and recording new material to get new people into their sound – while prepping for a big 2026.
And Dean added: “We’re wholesome people writing and playing music that we ourselves would like to hear. The passion that comes across during our live show pales in comparison to the record. If you want a real experience of this band, you need to see us live. We are excited to bring a fresh approach, merging many different influences to put a recognisable staple on the music circuit. The genre certainly isn’t dead and we’re dying to prove it.”
