Introducing: Savage Fox

Australian solo artist Savage Fox puts a modern spin on the good old sound of mid-2000s rock and punk in a sound he describes as “energetic, fun and personal.”

Savage Fox is the work of Canberra music producer Alex Ward, who started the project at the end of last year. And in his words: ” The purpose of creating Savage Fox was to embrace the music we all know and love from the early to mid 2000s  like Pennywise, Silverstein and My Chemical Romance  put a personal modern spin on it and release it into the world.”

And on the sound he’s created, Alex tells us: “Savage Fox is a mash up of old school skate punk meets modern post hardcore with a dash of pop punk.”

Our latest taste of this is the lively Blame, which was released last month. It opens up with heavy punky guitars and rolling drums, then stabbing chords feed into an opening verse led by engaging vocals and supported by driving drums. That feeds into a feisty chorus, and second time around it gives way to a little guitar solo before call-and-answer spoken vocals tee up a final blast of the chorus.

On the track, Alex told us: “The reception for Blame has been excellent. With the Australian election just days away, it seemed appropriate to release this song now. This song is intentionally ambiguous, leading the listener to reinforce their own opinions, but also perhaps making them reflect their own world views.”

Blame is the fifth Savage Fox single, following on from the excellent Eighteen earlier this year. We firmly recommend checking out last year’s Tell Me, which has strong The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus vibes about it, and the more intense Bring The Silence, and the more punky, singalong debut single Lose It, which drops into a surprisingly heavy and deliciously good breakdown before setting up a melodic conclusion.

The Savage Fox sound has been influenced by the sound of the 2000s, courtesy of bands like Pennywise, Motion City Soundtrack, Silverstein, My Chemical Romance, Enter Shikari and Architects. And on what inspires his music, Alex explains: “Mostly personal experiences as I love touching on segments of my life that have a high nostalgic value. But I also dabble in storytelling, as you will see in the near future with a debut album to release later this year.”

Indeed, Savage Fox will be releasing an eight-track album later this year, on which he promises there are “a few absolute bangers.” He also plans to do a few shows to promote the album.

And Alex added: “Savage Fox is one man making music alone in a home studio driven by absolute passion and a love to create fun and energetic music.”
