Midlands rockers Yo Titan have crafted an engaging alternative rock sound that blends elements of metal and rock with pop and electronic undertones, which they describe as “alternative, catchy and dynamic.”
The band is formed of lifelong friends Matt, Jay, Luke and Gregg, who hail from Cannock, in Staffordshire, and have played in various bands together over the years. Yo Titan started out when Jay, Luke and Gregg started jamming together a few years ago, before bringing Matt into the mix.
And on the sound they’ve crafted, Gregg told us: “I believe we encompass a diverse range of genres, including alternative rock, pop, metal, electronic, and more. Our goal is to seamlessly blend these genres in a dynamic and exciting manner.”
To give us a taste for this, the band sent us Light The Beacon, which was released in March and features the vocals of Jessie Powell from Dream State. It opens up with a pulsing synth and distant guitar, before a big scream of “light the beacon” ushers in heavier guitars. Matt’s engaging vocals take over with a fun little stabbing guitar and synth sounds. Jessie’s vocals join in before dual vocals through a lively chorus. The pace drops in the verse before flowing into another busy chorus, before dropping into a mellow section that gives way to a final blast of the chorus.
On the track, Gregg said: “The feedback has been fantastic! It has a slightly more metal-core sound for us, which has helped us reach new audiences. People have been very positive about it. When we were recording vocals for the track, Matt noticed that this particular chorus would sound much better with a female feature. At the same time, we discovered that Jessie was advertising her services for features. It was as simple as sending her a message for a great back-and-forth chat via email. Having Matt and Jessie perform a duetting-style chorus has amplified the track tenfold.”
They’ve since followed that up with their 10th single Low, which was released earlier this month and the band describe as their “favourite song to date.” It opens up with a cool low riff and a little uttering of “low” before stabbing guitars drop into a laid-back verse. Heavier guitars jump in as the vocals intensify and flow into a big singalong chorus, which ends with bouncy guitars before another laid-back verse with light synths builds up to another catchy chorus. It drops into pulsing synth sounds that set up a cool little guitar solo, setting up a final blast of the chorus. Check it out here:
Those tracks add to a solid back catalogue of singles, including the excellent Control, the more anthemic Stars and their first two releases, which sound very pandemic lockdown-inspired, Work From Home – which features the line “It’s time to go and lounge on the sofa, Wake me when Bargain Hunt is over” – and Playing Games.
The Yo Titan sound has been influenced by the likes of Don Broco, Bring Me the Horizon, Dayseeker and Bilmuri. As Gregg explains: “We believe these bands are at the forefront of modern rock music and serve as a great source of motivation and inspiration for us as songwriters.
“We’re fortunate that we all share a common preference for similar genres and bands. This shared musical taste influences our writing styles, which greatly facilitates the creative process. Matt is an exceptional lyricist who not only imparts profound meanings to our songs but also crafts incredibly catchy tunes that are perfect for singing along to.”
Yo Titan are currently in the process of booking more shows, and we expect it won’t be long until they have more new music released.
And Gregg adds: “Yo Titan is a shared hobby between four guys who just love writing music! So far, all our released music has received fantastic feedback. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to everyone who has streamed our songs, liked our posts, and purchased tickets to our shows!”
