Bristol band Buried In Bermuda increasingly blend doom and stoner vibes with metalcore elements in a sound they describe as “thought-provoking, powerful and eclectic.”
The band, formed of Gilles Macey (vocals and lead guitar), Kyle Needham (rhythm guitar), Alex Bowyer (drums) and Ben Hussey (bass guitar and backing vocals), started out as a three-piece covers band with minimal experience of playing live. But, after a few lineup changes and surviving the Covid lockdown, the band has amassed more than 90 gigs as they honed their sound.
And on that sound, they told us: “We are a blend of Audioslave and Alter Bridge, but with some elements of Killswitch Engage now that we are adding some more metalcore inspiration to our newest songs.”
Our latest taste of this is Torment, which was released at the start of this month. It opens up with a cool bending bass sound that continues under lively darting guitars that drop into an engaging opening verse of edgy vocals supported by a darting riff. The pace picks up as the vocals intensify, feeding into a powerful chorus supported by crushing guitars and drums. The new-found metalcore edge is in full view as growled vocals tee up a second chorus. That gives way to an instrumental section led by huge driving drums, with stabbing guitars slowing down and vicious screamed vocals dropping into deliciously doomy guitars. The pace slows and a little bassline and spoken vocals set up a big final blast of the chorus.
On the track, the band said: “We have had some great feedback so far, particularly for the music video, and it’s doing well on Spotify and YouTube, thankfully! For new listeners, expect an ‘in-your-face’ delivery of post-apocalyptic lyrics, some doom and stoner vibes with the breakdown and a chorus that includes gang vocals – a first for us as a band. Although the style marks a bit of a shift for us into heavier and more aggressive themes, everyone will soon see with our next single, that we also have a calmer and more sensitive style to portray/display in our music.”
Torment is the latest in a string of singles over the last two years, since their debut release Electric, which has a very different vibe to it. We especially like the sound of You Don’t Know, which features powerful guitars, fun guitar riffs and a big solo, the big anthemic Take Back Our Lives, and the lively Fire In Your Eyes, which portrays elements of the band’s heavier shift.
The Buried In Bermuda sound has been influenced by a wide range of artists, including the likes of Alter Bridge, Avenged Sevenfold, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Van Halen, Pantera, Audioslave, Chris Cornell, Myles Kennedy, Flea and, apparently, the Spice Girls.
And on what inspires them to write music, they told us: “A real mix of themes, but our last two songs have focused on a post-apocalyptic and dystopian world – perhaps a nod to current affairs, which unfortunately seem to be teetering on all-out war. However, we are also introducing themes of mental health and heartbreak into our songs coming later this year and early next year.”
There’s plenty more to come from Buried In Bermuda, with a new single coming out in August before recording another new single. They’ll be playing at Firevolt Festival in Stockport on 10 August before embarking on a UK tour in October.
