Introducing: Polarskies

French trio Polarskies combine alternative metal, dark pop and cinematic synths in an intriguingly contrasting sound that they describe as “heavy, emotional and atmospheric.”

The Parisian band is born out of the ashes of metalcore band DVWKINS, who we introduced you to way back in October 2017, as vocalist Julie, guitarist Vince and drummer Guillaume were all in the Metalcore band. Interestingly, their former bandmates also went on to join new bands, including Thomas joining deathcore band Hurakan, who we introduced you to in July 2021, Antonin joining Resolve and Seb creating Mantrats, who we haven’t covered (yet).

After taking a period of downtime, Julie, Vince and Guillaume decided it would be a shame to stop there and began working on a new adventure with their producer Nelson Martins. They’ve crafted a different approach that retains their metal roots but brings a more melodic edge.

On the Polarskies sound, Julie told us: “Polarskies is rock with a dark pop sensibility, a touch of alternative metal, and layers of electro on top. Our music isn’t bound by genre; it evolves organically, wherever the inspiration leads us. Compared to DVWKINS, it’s a very different sound and approach. While our roots are in metal, with Polarskies we’re exploring broader sonic landscapes. It is a more mature and ambitious project. With DVWKINS we were still searching; with Polarskies, we’ve found our voice.

“That said, there are strong continuities too: the distinct vocal timbre, our desire to connect deeply with listeners, and the creative family we’re building around us. We’re still collaborating with some of the same talents—composers, producers, and our longtime video director, Benjamin Bachelard from Disclosure Production, who also shot the very first DVWKINS music video 8 years ago.”

Our first taste of this is Polarskies’ superb debut single Eclipse, which was released last week. It opens up with high-pitched guitars and synth that kick into life over atmospheric drums, before dropping into a calm opening verse led by Julie’s delicate vocals. The nu-metal vibes continue as dual vocals build up to a big singalong chorus “We fear the howl, We will stray, Alone in night’s cold tow, Shadows bestow sorrow, You know, Oh in silence our scare grows, Burn me row by row, In the night’s mournful bow.”

The pace drops in a verse of high-pitched vocals over a stabbing bassline, building up to another big chorus. It slows again with Julie’s light vocals that suddenly increase in intensity over stabbing guitars to set up a big final blast of the chorus.

On the track, Julie said: “We’re beyond excited! We worked really hard on this track, it’s kind of like our baby coming into the world. And it also marks the beginning of a new adventure for us, it’s the first day of the rest of our lives, in a way.

“The reception so far has been amazing, people are really connecting with the emotion and intensity of Eclipse. Many people tell us they don’t usually listen to this style of music, but they love it. For those who haven’t heard it yet, expect a mix of soaring melodies, heavy-hitting instrumentals, and a balance between raw energy and atmospheric textures. It’s a song about duality – loss and hope, shadows and light – and that theme really defines our sound.”

The Polarskies sound draws on shared influences like Bring Me The Horizon, Linkin Park, Muse, MGK, Placebo and Jutes and musicians who “aren’t afraid to blend genres and push emotional boundaries.” While Julie’s vocals draw inspiration from the likes of Poppy, Maria Brink (In This Moment) and Hayley Williams (Paramore).

And on what inspires them to write music, Julie explains: “I write about whatever moves me at that moment, whether it’s world news, the love life of someone close to me, or a book I’ve read that has particularly touched me.

“We write as a way of processing life: its struggles, resilience, and the hope you find in dark places. A lot of our songs explore contrasts: vulnerability vs. strength, chaos vs. beauty, despair vs. hope. At the core, it’s about human experience and connection.”

If you like what you heard from Eclipse then you’re in luck, as Polarskies will be releasing their second single before the end of this year, ahead of a six-track EP next year. Some of those tracks have already been recorded, mixed, and are ready for release, with Julie writing these interview responses on the way out of the recording studio earlier this week. While the band also hopes to get out and play live shows soon.

And Julie added: “We want people to feel something special when they listen to us, we aim to deliver an intense and unexpected experience. Don’t assume you know what kind of music is coming next; you just might be surprised.”
