Introducing: Baby and the Beats

Belgian band Baby and the Beats deliver songs with meaning in a metal sound that covers themes as varied as romanticism, global warming and war. The trio have crafted an approach that combines male and female vocals with virtuoso guitar riffs, which they describe as “melodic, intense and inspired.”

The Liege trio started out as a pop/rock band with Patrick on lead vocals and guitar and Stefano on bass. But the addition of Cassandra as joint lead vocalist in the summer of 2024 saw them evolve to a melodic metal style, with Stefano taking over as lead guitarist. Patrick and Stefano are the primary music writers, with additional support from session musicians on the rhythm section.

On the band’s evolution, Patrick told us: “The sound is based on a duo of voices: female and male. They generally alternate during the verses so to better join during the chorus, complementing each other in vocal harmonies. The global sound is rough, but melodic. Stefano’s virtuoso guitar riffs are filling the space, supported by Patrick guitar tones.”

We first met the band with their debut song Your Revolution, which we covered in our September new music round-up. However, Patrick tells us that track was more of a “teaser” than a single, so we’re back covering their real debut single The Beat, which was released at the end of last month.

The Beat opens up with a little bubbling synth noise that drops into dramatic guitars and Patrick’s engaging vocals. Cassandra’s delicious vocals take over alongside a chugging riff, flowing into a catchy chorus, before another building verse. A second chorus gives way to a meandering little guitar solo, which ends with the opening synth flurry. Another moody verse sees call-and-answer vocals gradually build up to a big final chorus.

On the track, Patrick said: “The Beat is a song designed to make you feel alive. It focuses on those many rhythms that nature and biology have been implementing in and around us and emphasises their role and influences on our lives and actions.”

The Baby and the Beats sound is influenced by a wide range of musical interests, including a shared love of Evanescence, Marylin Manson and Lacuna Coil. Cassandra is big into Elvis Presley, while Stefano studied music theory and is a big fan of everything from classical music, especially JS Bach, to italian music and 80s metal like Europe, Dokken and Dream Theater. Patrick is a big fan of classic 70s rock, including Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Genesis and Pink Floyd, as well as metal bands like Rammstein and Nightwish.

And on what inspires them to write music, Patrick explains: “As far as I’m concerned, starting a song comes as an impulse ignited by intense emotions. The source can be actuality (like war in Ukraine, as you will hear with our third single) or just powerful feelings, which can come from nature, art or just real experiences. Stefano’s writing is a priori based on his powerful guitar riffs.”

There’s plenty more to come from Baby and the Beats, who have three more singles set for release leading up to their first EP, which should be released early next year. That release will be the starting point for more ambitious gigs, with a view to releasing their debut album next summer.

And Patrick added: “Our goal is really to meet the fans on stage. We’ll keep proposing new songs on the platforms, but we strongly believe that the best way to enjoy music is singing those songs with the band in a live concert. That’s our goal for the next years. Meet the fans. On stage.”
