From the heart of Canada’s Newfoundland island comes a fascinating, mysterious metal project that represents the brutal nature of planet Earth. Instrumental act IRØNVEIL exists as a conduit for an ancient planetary consciousness known as Miasma, formed when ice first began to claim the Earth billions of years ago.
Miasma absorbed the planet’s most violent epochs through glaciation, tectonic collapse and extinction, which fractured continents, suffocated oceans and unleashed endless polar winds. Those forces became the sound of IRØNVEIL, whose instrumental pieces serve as a sonic record of Earth’s destructive transformations through crushing low frequencies and suffocating harmonies, which they describe as “powerful, melodic-ish and evil.”
On the sound they’ve crafted, the band told us: “If you are willing to take that step, be prepared to listen to instrumental compositions that highlight crushing seven-string guitar riffs, low-frequency drones, and slow-collapsing rhythms. The compositions treat between using sentiments within Aeolian and Locrian Modes, Phrygian Dominant Scale and even Blues Scale riffs. The notable sound within the music is that almost every melody note is harmonized to a minor third – giving off a powerful, yet evil sound to the compositions.”
Our first taste of this is IRØNVEIL’s debut single, the suitably dark and mysterious-sounding Desolate Surroundings, which was released last month. It opens up with a pulsing sound that continues under a meandering guitar lick and laid-back drums. A plodding riff takes over and is joined by rolling drums and big crushing cymbals, before the lick returns. That gives way to a cool high-pitched guitar line that’s joined by a thick bassline, which gives way to an ambient section of light guitars and cymbal hits. Stabbing guitars come in and feed into a big atmospheric section that loops back into the cool lick to bring the track to a powerful conclusion.
On the track, the band said: “Desolate Surroundings is the first release (or Chapter) of the album Planetary Recollections, which is fully completed and will be releasing in March 2026. These chapters of recollection are being released to the world is important for us. This first chapter conveys messages from the planet that existed long before life as we know it began to exist.
“The reception has been very positive and supportive. Though we are in the building stages of our social media accounts and our followings, the numbers are growing daily and our reach is constantly broadening. Where we are very early into the rolling out of this project, we are very happy and thankful with the response. We feel that the release of Desolate Surroundings is paving a great path for the follow up single Borderline Ritual. For those who haven’t listened yet, we hope you get a moment to listen. If you are willing to listen, please be prepared for Instrumental Doom Metal with some rhythmic groove and a dash of evil.”
The IRØNVEIL sound and vision is heavily influenced by Black Sabbath, along with bands like Mastodon and Meshuggah. The band also draws on the metal community of Newfoundland and Canada, including the likes of Children of Eve, Deadgaard, Protest the Hero, Same Fears and Today I Caught the Plague.
And on what inspires them to write music, they told us: “IRØNVEIL is influenced by natural forces rather than human experience. The music draws from extreme environments; glaciation, tectonic pressure, arctic wind, collapse, and deep time. Key themes include planetary memory, environmental violence, indifference to humanity, and the slow, unstoppable processes that shape and destroy worlds.
“Rather than telling stories or expressing emotion, Ironveil focuses on atmosphere, scale, and endurance. The absence of lyrics reflects a core idea: nature does not explain itself. The ensemble’s writing is driven by the tension between stillness and catastrophe, capturing the sound of landscapes forming, eroding, and vanishing over geological time.”
IRØNVEIL’s second single, Borderline Ritual, will be released this month, ahead of their debut album coming out next month. The band is also in the process of developing their live show and perfecting the imagery and theatre of their performance.
And they added: “IRØNVEIL exists not to comfort, but to reveal. Our social media accounts do not just highlight the music of IRØNVEIL, but a distinct theatre, lore and imagery – all highlighting how epic nature can truly be. We also want to give a major thanks to our team at Noteable Records (Lewisporte, NL), Citadel House Records (Lewisporte, NL) and at CYMBA Publishing. They are helping us grow and build this project.”
