BRAILLE – Green Big Eyes

Italian band BRAILLE fuse crushing riffs and intense vocals in a powerful post-hardcore meets melodic hardcore sound. We discovered them back in December, around Amigdala, the first single of their latest release cycle, when frontman Axel Pellegrini told us: “BRAILLE’s sound is a mix of very emotional metalcore and melodic hardcore. We love experimenting and trying to come up with something that surprises us first. Another important characteristic of our music is that the lyrics are written partly in English and partly in Italian, our mother tongue.”

The third single of that cycle is the massive Green Big Eyes, which was released earlier this month. It dives straight into Axel’s intense vocals over heavy guitars with support from clean backing vocals from guest vocalist Luna. A calmer instrumental interlude follows, after which the intense vocals continue alongside big guitars and driving drums. The song crescendos halfway through, dropping into a huge breakdown with low-tuned guitars, which gives way to empassioned Italian vocals, which end with a raw scream. Driving guitar chords kick in and the dual vocals return in a powerful conclusion.

On the track, the band said: “Green Big Eyes is a raw, emotionally charged post-hardcore/metalcore track born from a devastating breakup. It captures the moment when the person who leaves becomes impossible to forget, turning into a constant presence in the mind and an open wound that never fully heals. The song unfolds like an open-hearted letter to someone who chose to walk away, blending melancholic melodic lines with heavy, depressive breakdowns and sharp emotional shifts. For Braille, this track represents a turning point: their first song featuring such a strong presence of Italian lyrics, used as an intimate and visceral language to amplify vulnerability and pain. Green Big Eyes lives in the tension between aggression and fragility, transforming heartbreak into something loud, honest, and deeply personal.”

Electron – Trap

London-based duo Electron fuse elements of grunge, hard rock, nu-metal and metalcore in a hard-hitting sound that they described to us as “vicious, ferocious and unapologetic.” We discovered the band back in April 2024, when frontman Jason Payne told us: “Our sound is heavy and our music dares to provoke you and make you uncomfortable, in a good way. We love to make people think, and touch their hidden feelings. The EP we’re about to launch is the crème-de-la-crème of our vast catalogue. We live in a world where everyone’s losing the grip of reality, addicted to modern technologies, obsessed with ‘perfection,’ unable to accept who they truly are, and losing touch with real connections.”

The band released a couple of singles last year, before dropping new track Trap, which was produced by Romesh Dodangoda, last week. It opens up with pulsing synth sounds that give way to a chunky guitar riff. A mellow opening verse follows, before a heavy riff kicks in with more intense vocals, flowing into a singalong chorus “Lie to me, Then tell me how it feels to be free from this misery, Poison me, And drown me in the floods of sorrow, I know you lie to me.” The chorus ends with heavy guitars, which drop into another laid-back verse building to a big chorus. It pauses for breath after the second chorus, with building guitars under whispery vocals, then dropping into a chunky guitar riff. It slows down again, teeing up a big final blast of the chorus and a delicious guitar solo bringing the track to an end on a high.

Full Nothing – Bleed Me Dry

Finland-based international band Full Nothing have honed a dark rock and alternative metal sound that fuses progressive, melodic and symphonic elements. The band is the brainchild of composer and guitarist Nicolás Marcos, who works with musicians from all around the world who share the same musical interests. We first met them last January, around the release of their single Only Human, but they just sent us Bleed Me Dry, which features Dayseeker’s Rory Rodriguez plus South African vocalist Joel Dickson.

The track starts out with atmospheric instrumentals and engaging vocals, which continue over clean guitars and build up to a powerful chorus. Orchestral elements creep in, including occasional stabs of violin, as the vocals intensify in a big second chorus.

LIVERUM – Baltic Breath

Norway’s LIVERUM share a passion for the outdoors and music that’s “groovy, atmospheric and meaningful.” The Oslo band, several of whom moved from Poland during school, fuse intense vocals with hypnotic soundscapes in a sound that fuses death metal and progressive metal.

On their sound, frontman Adrian Dzieciol told us: “I’d describe our music as full of contrast. Yes, we love heavy metal, but we also love giving space to atmospheric sections, maybe even too much sometimes, but that’s genuinely how we feel and express the music.”

We discovered the band in December around the release of Arctic Breeze, the lead single from their new album Meaning Will Travel, which was released earlier this month. From the album, the band sent us the third track Baltic Breath, which opens up with a fun stabbing guitar riff. Adrian’s intense vocals join in, and eventually drop into a cool section of winding guitar licks that continue into an atmospheric chorus. Intense double bass drum takes over, continuing relentlessly under the mesmeric guitars and big vocals. The pace eventually slows with a light guitar lick and laid-back drums, picking up pace with a big scream and flowing into an atmospheric outro.

Ninebanks – What Daisy Did

Sunderland band Ninebanks take us back to the days of 2000s pop-punk with a catchy alternative sound. We discovered the band in September 2023, around the release of their fourth single, Interrupted.

Back then, guitarist Callum Cowie told us: “If you’ve never listened to a Ninebanks song before, the first thing that you’re going to notice is our catchy hook lines. It’s something that everyone that’s ever reviewed us has stated time and time again, and when we play live it usually only takes one chorus to get people singing.”

The band released one single last year, Safety & Skeletons, before dropping What Daisy Did last week, which the band describe as “a fast, sharp pop-punk anthem built on chaos, character and defiance, telling the story of a rebellious punk girl who lives by her own rules.” The track opens up with engaging vocals “You know I don’t put my nose into other people’s business, You’re someone I know and I can’t avoid the gossip.” Drums, chunky guitar chords and a little guitar lick join in, building up to the short, sharp, catchy chorus “Can you tell me what Daisy did, That girl she could start a riot, Can you tell me what Daisy did?” A delicious verse with stabbing guitars builds up to an extended chorus. That drops into palm-muted guitars as we start to learn “what Daisy’d do,” before building up to a final blast of the chorus.

Pageant Mum – The War of Me and You

Bolton band Pageant Mum (pictured above) fuse grunge, punk and post-hardcore sound in an angry sound that aims to offer a voice for people going through the “shit parts of life.” We discovered the young quartet, all aged between 18 and 20, back in October, around Hackles Up, the first single released from their second EP Finis Amoris Est, which was released last week.

Back then, lead vocalist Izzy told us: “Our goal is to give a voice to the shit parts of life. You hear songs all the time about boys and feeling heartbroken, but they never sound the way you feel when that stuff happens… We want to sound like the bad feelings you get, the anger, the pain, the grit, that’s the Pageant Mum sound.”

The band sent us the EP’s final track, The War of Me and You. It opens up with laid-back guitars that continue as guitarist Liam Ormes takes on lead vocals for the first time in an engaging verse. The intensity increases as Izzy’s vocals take over in a powerful chorus supported by rolling drums. Second time around, the chorus drops into palm-muted guitars then call and answer vocals, which end with Izzy’s cry of “in case you change your goddamn mind” setting up a big final blast of the chorus.

On the track, the band said: “The War of Me and You sits at the emotional core of Pageant Mum’s upcoming EP, Finis Amoris Est. Built around long, smooth vocal melodies and the contrast between male and female lead vocals, the track captures the quiet devastation of a relationship ending not through betrayal or anger, but inevitability. Notably, it marks the first Pageant Mum release to feature Liam on lead vocals, adding a new dynamic to the band’s sound and reinforcing the song’s sense of dual perspective and emotional tension.”The EP also includes the excellent Lick It Off Knives and Prelapsarian, which opens up with a funky bassline and a cool driving riff under Izzy’s delicious vocals building up to a powerful chorus, so go and give it a listen.

Polarskies – Echoes

Parisian trio Polarskies combine alternative metal, dark pop and cinematic synths in a contrasting sound that they describe as “heavy, emotional and atmospheric.” It was born out of metalcore band DVWKINS, with vocalist Julie, guitarist Vince and drummer Guillaume staying together to create a new sound.

On the sound they’ve crafted, Julie told us: “Polarskies is rock with a dark pop sensibility, a touch of alternative metal, and layers of electro on top. Our music isn’t bound by genre; it evolves organically, wherever the inspiration leads us. Compared to DVWKINS, it’s a very different sound and approach. While our roots are in metal, with Polarskies we’re exploring broader sonic landscapes. It is a more mature and ambitious project. With DVWKINS we were still searching; with Polarskies, we’ve found our voice.”

We discovered the trio in October, around the release of their debut single Eclipse, which they followed up with Afterall in November, before releasing Echoes last week. It opens up with stabbing guitars that drop into huge driving guitars and rolling drums over a powerful synth in a big atmospheric intro. The pace slows with pulsing synths under Julie’s soft vocals, which start to build as guitars kick in and power into a huge singalong chorus “You were young, lost in your play, Let’s hope that you will find a way, We were young and got lost in our play, Yearning you, forevermore, I crave for you beside, Moments once dear, now out of sight, Memories of you in my mind, Yearning you, forevermore.” A thick bassline and synths support another laid-back verse with vocals gradually building in intensity towards another big chorus. The drums pick up the intensity in a more chaotic conclusion that ends with a rolling guitar riff.

On the track, the band said: “Produced by two members of Skip The Use (French electro band), Echoes explores the pull of the past and the comfort it can represent, while warning against the temptation to take refuge in it. Echoes is an invitation to embrace memories without getting lost in them, and to keep moving forward despite their lingering resonance. Entirely created by the band, the music video depicts a character with supernatural powers, trapped in a hostile present and haunted by the persistent echoes of a lost childhood.”

VENUES – Hollow Walls

German band VENUES fuse lively riffs and screamed vocals in a melodic but intense metal meets post-hardcore sound. We first discovered the band back in April 2021, around the release of Rite of Passage, which was the first single with their new lineup onboard. But it’s safe to say the band has gone from strength to strength since, releasing two albums, Solace and Transience, which has seen tracks rack up over one million streams, before a series of singles over the last couple of years.

Back in 2021, vocalist Lela Gruber told us: “The typical VENUES sound is a mix between modern metalcore guitars mixed with rather old school hard rock riffs, out-of-this-world drums and catchy melodies. Robin’s shouts make our songs sound rough and wild, while my raspy and smokey clean vocals bring in the deep feelings and the vulnerability, while still sounding energetic and strong. In the end, VENUES is for everyone who’s looking for music to sing, scream, cry, but also dance to.”

Our latest taste of the VENUES sound is Hollow Walls, which was released last week. It opens up with a pulsing synth that drops into a deliciously heavy low-tuned guitar riff supported by piercing synths. Lela’s vocals are supported by growled retorts before flowing into a delicious chorus “Curtains close, They stop the show cause you’re so tough on the outside, Thinking you’ll be safe, but your walls are giving in, You’re shining, Your colours blinding me, Letting go of your imperfections, Holding on to your own deception.” The heavy guitars return, dropping into a verse and another catchy chorus, which ends with a big scream and a delicious guitar solo. Crushing guitar chords take over, joined by vicious screamed vocals and wild electronic elements, teeing up a big final blast of the chorus.
