New Music Round-Up: HKSPK, Icing Sands, Illumina A.D., Nocturn, Revelation 23, RivetSkull, Sunset Rebellion, TALNAK & TANGIBLE

Since we’ve been using music discovery platform Groover to unearth new rock and metal bands, we’ve written occasional articles to bring you tracks from artists that didn’t respond to our interview requests. And today, we have nine new bands for you to discover from around the world.

This batch of tracks offers up a mix of rock, metal and nu-metal by bands from France, Germany, Italy, the UK and the US, listed in alphabetical order.

HKSPK – Torture

German band HKSPK aims to deliver powerful, uncompromising metal in a violent fusion of black and death hostility. The Frankfurt trio of Jim Tonik (vocals, lead guitar), Leon (rhythm guitar) and Arne (drums) was formed in 2023 and released their debut album Holy Scum the following year, before backing it up with the intriguingly titled EP The Human Butcher last year.

They’ve just followed that up with new single Torture, which was released in January. It opens up with a feisty darting riff that continues over a held note before blasting into a mass of intense blastbeat drums and repeating dual riffs. Stabs of guitar take us into a wild conction of intense vocals, fast-paced guitars and relentless drums, before the stabbing riffs continue over crushing cymbals. And a wild scream brings this short track to a close.

On the track, the band said: “Torture is built as a dialogue between two voices — one calmly describing a harmless scene, while the other descends into hysteria, warning of death and chaos. The locust serves as a symbol for how small problems are blown into apocalyptic visions. A raw Black/Death track about fear, distortion and human overdrama.”

You can follow HKSPK on Facebook and Instagram, and check out their music on Spotify, Bandcamp, Apple Music, Deezer and YouTube.

Icing Sands – Waves

Berlin-based artist Icing Sands fuses elements of rock and metal with electronic influences in a distinctive and emotive sound. The band released their debut single Waves last month. It starts with mellow vocals over moody electronic sounds, before chunky guitars kick in and drop back into the engaging vocals. Stabs of guitar creep in before flowing into a big chorus supported by low-tuned guitars and piercing synths. It slows down again through a laid-back verse, gradually building towards another big chorus that ends with chunky guitars and a repeating guitar line over intense screamed vocals. It slows again, before a final blast of the chorus. The band plans to back up their debut track with five new songs next month.

Illumina A.D. – Incubi Intus

New Mexico’s Illumina A.D. (pictured above), which loosely translates to Life After Death, hold a desire to fuse the brutal with the beautiful, which comes across in their powerful yet engaging groove metal sound. The Albuquerque quintet released their debut album Days of Blood & Fire at the end of December, from which they sent us the opener Incubi Intus.

The track opens up with light guitars that develop alongside a stabbing riff, before dropping into a fun stabbing riff and plenty of cymbals. More intense drums kick in to drive the track along, before a cool lick and a cheeky little solo set up a powerful opening verse led by engaging vocals of frontwoman Nepthisis, which flows into a big singalong chorus. It drops back into a stabbing riff that bridges into another powerful verse supported by chugging guitars before another huge chorus. A big drum roll gives way to another stabbing riff before mellowing with laid-back guitars and vocals, before a delicious little guitar solo. Another thrashy riff takes over, before a bigger guitar solo tees up a final blast of chunky guitar chords to bring the track to an end.

On the track, the band said: “Incubi Intus is a high-velocity, thrash-driven opener from Days of Blood & Fire. This song charges forward intently before dropping into crushing grooves and thrash breakdowns. The song balances relentless momentum with heavy, controlled pacing shifts, blending the aggression of Kreator and Sodom with the darker, modern weight of Behemoth. It’s fast, hostile, and deliberate – built to hit hard, then loom even harder.”

Nocturn – Colorless

Kansas City band Nocturn have been lighting up their local scene with their moody hard rock meets alternative rock sound. The quintet of Jackson Smokorowski (vocals), Liam Hann (guitar), Levi Whitaker (drums) and Oscar Morgan (bass) have developed a sound based around influences like TOOL, My Chemical Romance, Sevendust, and Mastodon.

Our latest taste of this is their second single Colorless, which was released in December. It opens up with an edgy little riff that’s joined by more guitars and slow drums that drop into a moody verse led by meandering vocals. The drums pick up pace as it flows into an engaging chorus, which flows straight back into another delicious storytelling verse and a more intense chorus supported by shoutier backing vocals. The intensity continues with a piercing guitar solo over heavy guitars and drums, which flows into a big, atmospheric final blast of the chorus.

Revelation 23 – Veal

Edinburgh’s Revelation 23 have crafted an alternative metal sound that blends downtuned guitars with engaging vocals in their mission to create music that’s honest, heavy and melodic. The band released its sixth single Veal at the end of last month.

The track starts with dreamy guitars and light drums over engaging vocals. The vocals and guitars quickly intensify with the line “It makes me sick to my stomach, He licks his lips before he feeds,” before flowing into repeats of “He only eats veal.” It slows again in another mellow verse that builds in intensity again, before delicate vocals deliver the lines “Oh, you’re just so young, love, So very young, love, Hands by your skirt, you talk so brave, Walk like a girl but you fuck like prey.” Heavier guitars kick in as the vocals pick up pace and set up a powerful conclusion with more repeats of the chorus line.

You can follow Revelation 23 on Instagram and TikTok, and check out their music on Spotify, Bandcamp, Apple Music and YouTube.

RivetSkull – The Hammer Falls

Seattle’s RivetSkull create music that’s rooted in the origins of heavy metal and channels the spirit of the classics while carving their own path with a sound they describe as “authentic, powerful and uncompromising.” On their sound, the quartet say they “trio “blend razor-sharp riffs, evocative lyrics, and commanding performances to create a visceral and memorable metal experience for fans around the world.”

The band sent us The Hammer Falls, which was released in August. It opens up with a delicious driving riff that drops into an engaging, atmospheric verse that flows into a big catchy chorus “Where will you be when the hammer falls, when the hammer falls down, Where will you be when the lightning strikes, and no one else around, Where will you be when the hammer falls, when the hammer falls down, Where will you be when humanity falls and starting all over again.” It drops back into a lively verse and another big chorus, which flows into an atmospheric section of powerful vocals before a big guitar solo. The pace slows and builds towards a big final blast of the chorus.

You can follow RivetSkull on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, and check out their music on Spotify, Bandcamp, Apple Music, Soundcloud, Deezer and YouTube.

Sunset Rebellion – War

Orlando rock band Sunset Rebellion aim to keep it loud and to the point with a raw intensity that’s free of gimmicks. Their latest single War delivers that in spades, starting with light guitars continuing under engaging vocals. The pace and intensity increases as it builds towards a singalong chorus supported by big guitar chords. Military style percussion bridges into another laid-back verse, and a second chorus drops into a guitar solo that feeds into more empassioned vocals to set up a powerful final blast of the chorus. That track comes from the band’s new EP Scream The Pain Out, which also includes the excellent The Human In Us All.

You can follow Sunset Rebellion on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, and check out their music on Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube.

TALNAK – Crawling Void

Italian metal project TALNAK was born out of “a need to scream out what every human being refuses to achieve, consider or even think about, even though it is part of a reality.” The Turin trio of Ivan (guitar and screams), Max (drum) and Jack (bass) have crafted a deliciously intense post-black meets death metal sound, of which our first taste is their debut single Crawling Void, which was released last month.

It opens up with crushing blastbeat drums under a mass of intense guitars that continue as wild screamed vocals join in. That eventually gives way to a stabbing riff before piercing guitar notes and more brutal drums support screamed vocals, giving way to another blast of heavy guitars and drums. Another high-pitched lick creeps alongside the chorus lines “It’s crawling closer from the abyss, A power unknown in a venomous kiss, Terror’s hand grips the stars so tight, Sickness spreads in the absence of light,” before ending with a fast-paced riff and a building dark noise.

You can check out TALNAK’s music on Spotify, Bandcamp and Soundcloud.

TANGIBLE – Les Déserteurs

French band TANGIBLE offers up a raw and sincere rock sound that blends powerful riffs and ethereal melodies. The Marseille quartet released their debut EP Où en est la lumière in January, from which they sent us the second track Les déserteurs.

It starts with a piercing guitar sound over light drums, which continue under a little bassline that’s joined by stabbing guitars. Engaging vocals take over alongside palm-muted guitars and gradually intensify before flowing into a singalong chorus. A cool guitar lick bridges into a feistier verse led by fast-paced vocals, building up to another big chorus. That gives way to a meandering guitar lick and driving drums, which set up another chorus and a final blast of high-pitched guitars.

On the track, the band said: “This track speaks of ambition and power, and speaks to those fascinated by slogans… an immersion into current events. The music is direct and uncompromising, capable of moving listeners with both its power and its sensitivity.”
