Introducing: The Stein

Spanish band The Stein aim to make loud, honest rock music that’s uncompromising and packed with attitude, in a sound they describe as “raw, powerful and emotional.”

The Madrid quintet of May Marín (vocals), Rubén Gálvez and Mario Pepe (guitars), Josue Stein (bass) and David Pulido (drums) formed in 2024 from the ashes of several different bands and released debut album Miran los lobos last year.

On the sound they’ve crafted since, they told us: “From the beginning, the focus was on writing real songs and building a solid identity as a band. We’d say it’s modern hard rock with classic roots, heavy guitars and melodies that stick. We care as much about power as we do about emotion.”

Our latest taste of this is Suerte (Luck), which was released in December. It opens up with a funky riff over chunky guitar chords, which drops into a verse led by May’s engaging vocals. That explodes into a big singalong chorus, feeding straight into another short verse and a big chorus. A little guitar solo takes over, ending with an ascending flourish, berfore the pace drops with laid-back guitars and vocals setting up a powerful final blast of the chorus.

On the track, the band said: “The response has been great so far, especially since the release of the music video. People are connecting the song’s energy and its message. Suerte is a hard-hitting track with big riffs, strong groove, but it also has an emotional side dedicated to people suffering from cancer.”

As mentioned, Suerte comes from the band’s debut album Miran los lobos (The Wolves Are Watching). The album also includes the catchy El Atajo (The Shortcut), the more old school sounding Todo da igual (Everything is the Same), the delicious En la oscuridad (In The Dark), and the superb, feistier closing track Guardián, which you can check out below.

The Stein’s music draws inspiration from classic and modern bands that have character, energy and a clear identity, including the likes of Van Halen, Metallica, Slash and Slipknot. And on what inspires them to write music, they explain: “Everyday life: relationships, love, heartbreak, personal struggles and we also like to add touches of fiction, using stories, comics (as in the case of our song Guardián, which talks about the Dark Knight) and images to amplify emotions.”

The Stein are looking to keep the momentum going this year, and are currently working on new material for their second album, alongside dropping new releases and playing as many gigs as possible.

And they added: “We’re not trying to reinvent the wheel, just to make songs that feel genuine and hit hard. No trends, no filters – just real Hard Rock.”
