Introducing: Atomic Whimper

Newcomers Atomic Whimper will delight you with filthy riffs, searing solos and engaging vocals in an old-school heavy metal sound that they describe as “pure, honest and strong.”

The band is formed of Italian guitarist Eligio Buia and English vocalist Chris Kerly. It began when Eligio decided to turn some ideas he was recording into an album, but he was missing the vocals. He began searching for someone to fill the void online and eventually discovered Chris, who was a session singer in the UK and had previously worked with bands like Zedi Forder.

Chris loved the instrumentals that Eligio had created and jumped at the chance to get involved in the project. The duo began working together, with Chris bringing huge energy into his vocal performances, melodies and lyrics. And the result was debut album The Doom Approach, which was released in July.

The album starts out in style with the chunky riff opening up Quicksand, which develops into a big singalong chorus. A second chorus drops into dramatic guitars before a delicious guitar solo and chunky guitars give way to stabbing guitar chords and cries of “We’re walking on quicksand” to bring the track to a close. Check it out here:

That’s followed by tracks like the dramatic Dream Keeper and a personal favourite Little Venice, which are jam-packed with chunky guitar goodness. Speaking of which, we guarantee you’ll love the naughty opening riff to Unnamed, which develops into slightly trippy sections and a delicious guitar solo.

The album keeps on delivering, including the slightly more laid-back Far Is Enough before it gets a little more intense in Dark Well Of Madness, which features a repeated riff and powerful vocals before a meandering solo. And the album concludes with a chunky riff opening up Out Of My Mind, which continues under an engaging verse and big cries of “Where does this madness take us?” A little solo creeps in, along with a repeating lick that feeds into a final blast of the chorus.

On the album, the band told us: “For being an unknown band and essentially an online collaboration, it’s been having a positive reception, especially on Bandcamp. Catchy and memorable guitar riffs, super vocals and a good vibe is what you will perceive when you listen to The Doom Approach.”

The Atomic Whimper sound is heavily influenced by classic metal acts like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden and a slightly less obvious choice of, in their words, “Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr.”

And on what inspires their music, they tell us: “The love for music is what drives us to write music. Everyday life, social problems, personal experiences and some poetic or fictional ideas are the main themes or topics we write about.”

Eligio and Chris are continuing to work on new musical ideas as they promote their debut album. And, if the opportunity arises, they’d love to play the album – so any gig promoters out there, hit them up. As they tell us: “We will continue to create music because that’s what we love so open your ears and your heart cause we’ll fill them with more heavy stuff.”

As far as we can see Atomic Whimper don’t have any social profiles, but you can check out their music on Spotify, Bandcamp, Apple Music and YouTube.
