Czech band Seeing Things fuse metalcore with a wide range of electro influences, from techno and dark house to acid and cyberpunk, in a fascinating sound they describe as “dark, energetic and angry.”
The band was founded in 2018 but was revitalised during the pandemic in 2020, when vocalist Erich and guitarist Martin joined guitarist and sole original member Vojta Pacesny. A year later, they completed the lineup with Patrik and Josef joining the band.
And on what to expect from the sound they’ve honed, Vojta tells us: “Fans can definitely expect heavy down-tuned metalcore fused with aspects from various EDM genres, such as techno, acid, mid-tempo, dark house, cyberpunk and many more. If we talk about the previous EP, that was more in the style of nu-metalcore with just a little bit of electronic parts here and there and much more focused on hard-hitting riffs. People sometimes call this genre ‘pissed-core,’ and don’t get me wrong we definitely still love it, but it might eventually get a little stale since everyone is doing it at the moment.”
Our first introduction to the band was their recent single Switchblade, which opens up with intense vocals over electronic noises then bursts into a driving riff with wild electronic sounds and a cry of “Switchblade.” The vocals intensify alongside heavier guitars before dropping into a more mellow section of electronic noises, but explodes into another vicious chorus. That gives way to wild vocals and crushing low-tuned guitars with piercing synth sounds to bring the track to an intriguing conclusion.
On the track, Vojta said: “Reactions to Switchblade are great so far! We went a bit more experimental than usual, and it might get fans of our OG stuff a bit confused, but I think it will all make sense again once the whole album release is out. We really enjoy merging heavy and groovy riffs with elements of rave techno music and we particularly enjoy anything that could be labeled as ‘acid.’ This will be reoccurring theme on many of the new releases.” Check it out in the video here:
That’s been followed by their new single Shapeshifter, which was released last week. It begins with pulsing synth sound then a repeating little guitar line and screamed vocals, which gives way to an awesome stabbing little electronic sound alongside intense vocals and heavy guitar chords. Cleaner vocals “I will never forget, Memories are burned deep down into my skin” come in and end on a big cry of “Shapeshifter,” which ushers in crushing guitars and the cool electronic noise. Rapidfire drums kick in to support a wild verse, which flies into another brief chorus that this time drops into echoey vocals. It gradually builds up to a section of low-tuned guitars and a heavy outro. Check it out here:
These singles follow on from the band’s previous single Soulkiller and 2022 debut EP Paranoia, which certainly has more of a metalcore feel to it. For example, check out the excellent Dystopia in the video below:
You may not be expecting this, but Vojta tells us the band is “totally hooked” on the Australian metalcore scene, including bands like Void of Vision, Northlane, Alpha Wolf, Thornhill and Darkmatter (who we definitely recommend having a listen to). They also love Wage War’s mastery of hard-hitting riffs and memorable choruses.
And on what inspires them to write music, Vojta explains: “Lyrically, we want to reflect on different current social issues. The lyrics are heavily inspired by themes of cyberpunk, matrix, and vampirism, but still have a very deep meaning and resonate with the struggles and complexities of our modern world. We delve into the dark underbelly of society, exploring the consequences of advancing technology, the loss of privacy, and the erosion of human connection.”
There’s plenty more coming our way from Seeing Things, who hope to release their debut album Blood Rave this year. On it, Vojta says: “It’ll combine the heaviness and raw energy from the Paranoia EP with heavy electronic parts. Most of the album is already done and we can’t wait to share with everyone!
“We just want to say a big thank you to everyone for the amazing support we’ve received for Switchblade and our previous single Soulkiller. It means the world to us that people are tuning in and loving what we’re putting out there.
