Bristol-based duo A Date With Destiny pride themselves on their ability to experiment with multiple genres while sticking to their rock/metal roots. The result is an intriguingly diverse sound that flows from moments of engaging melody into powerful retorts, which they describe as “genre-bending metal.”
A Date With Destiny was first formed in Hampshire in 2021 by Ben Morrissy (vocals and guitar) along with drummer Jacob Deedman, who was replaced by Korbin Maze. Ben and Korbin met at university and, after realising they shared similar interests, formed another project called Beyond Oath, from which they’ve brought the idea into a refined A Data With Destiny sound.
As the duo explains: “We are continuously attempting to merge genres so it’s hard to fully put us into a genre pool. Since we self-produce everything, we are constantly finding new ways to push our sound forward. At the end of the day, we usually stick and rock and always write honestly and true to ourselves.”
Our latest taste of this is What I Need, which was released in October. It opens up with laid-back piano melodies supporting engaging vocals, which continue as the track picks up pace with heavy guitars in a big atmospheric chorus. Another laid-back chorus sees chunky guitars creep in and lead us into another catchy chorus, before dropping into a vicious pulsing guitar riff and big screamed vocals. Another chorus follows and ends on a huge scream that brings the track to a lively conclusion.
On the single, the band told us: “What I Need has been our best release for gaining new listeners and reaching a wider audience. If you haven’t listened to the song, you can expect a song that stands as an emotionally charged song that tackles the theme of letting go of the past. We break the boundaries between the genres of alternative, pop-punk and metal with catchy choruses, emotional verses and a sneaky breakdown.”
That track follows on from a slightly less heavy ballad Hopeless and the excellent I’ll Never Change, which opens up with light vocals and a echoey high-pitched guitar. Heavier guitars kick in to support an engaging chorus then the pace drops and builds into another chorus. Rolling drums kick in, then building guitars usher in a delicious stabbing riff before the mellow guitars close the track out. Check out in the video below. And a series of singles, including the delicious The Dark, followed their debut album The End Of It All, which was released in 2022.
The A Date With Destiny sound draws major influence from the likes of I Prevail, Bad Omens and Bring Me The Horizon – on whom they tell us: “You must have every band say BMTH, but it’s hard not to when they are constantly evolving their sound and influencing the metal scene” – plus early inspiration from bands like Green Day.
And on what inspires them to write music, they add: “Our emotional experiences are always front and centre of our songs, whether it’s about how we feel or methods we are taking to improve ourselves. Music has always been a way of expressing ourselves and as cliché as it sounds, music is our therapy.”
The duo are constantly working on new music and, in fact, tell us they “are influenced by so many bands that we have over 50 unreleased songs/song ideas ranging from deathcore to ballads.”
And they add: “We’d like to take this opportunity to thank our fans for sticking with us. We are always improving and giving you the quality you deserve is always at the front of our minds. Stay tuned for whatever else is to come.”
