Greek band Still Dusk have a crafted an energetic, brooding and powerful rock meets metal sound that they describe as “mysterious, thrilling and dark.”
The Athens trio started out in 2019 as a five-piece group playing a few covers while writing their own music, which was largely indie rock. But they’ve evolved over time to a heavier style that toes the line between alternative rock and metal.
On the sound they’ve crafted, vocalist Konstantina told us: “We strongly believe in our music, as well as the rest of the up-and-coming bands of the Greek rock/metal scene, given that the Greek crowd is mostly supportive of it.”
Our first taste of this is Still Dusk’s debut three-track EP Garden, which was released in February. The EP opens up with a moody intro to Shattered, which continues into a funky little riff that flows into a verse led by Konstantina’s engaging vocals. A darting riff jumps in and feeds into a laid-back chorus before a livelier verse that flows into heavier vocals. Check it out here:
Next up is A Night With Morgan, which begins with a cool riff and building drums dropping into a lively instrumental section. That sets up an engaging verse that flows into a big catchy chorus “Hey hey Morgan Morgan, Do you have a knife, Hey hey Morgan Morgan, Stab me in the back, Hey Morgan, Don’t hide in the shadows, Between your eyes and your mind tonight.” Another verse continues into two blasts of the chorus then a cool little interplay between guitar and bass before a big scream of “Don’t lie” tees up a final chorus. Check it out in the video here:
The EP closes with its title track Garden, which opens up with a cool stabbing riff that drops into a verse of intense vocals supported by chunky guitar chords. It flows into a dramatic chorus “With no mercy, You thrashed my world, Into pieces, And I’m so ready tear that knife, You swore you’ll be there.” A second chorus gives way to a noodling guitar solo then vocals that begin in a whisper and quickly intensify with big gruff screams “Leaving small incisions in your fingertips, You’ll never hold a hand again, You don’t deserve to touch a hand again, I wish I could say that everything’s over now, As I secure your hanging head I’ll spread my sorrow in this place, This garden that we made won’t last As your existence flows through it.” It quickly kicks back into the chorus to close the EP in style.
On the EP, Konstantina told us: “Garden had a rather generous welcome by our audience, with over 6k streams on Spotify, and it’s the best way for someone to conceive what our sound feels like. Influences include a huge spectrum from indie pop/rock all the way to heavier metal genres and a lyrical focus on the current uptight state of the world.”
The Still Dusk sound has been influenced by the likes of Tool, Deftones, and System of a Down, on whom Konstantina says: “(They) masterfully blend powerful music with thought-provoking lyrics. Their ability to convey intense emotions and address societal issues resonates deeply with our own artistic vision.”
“Our music draws inspiration from the raw emotions of mental health struggles, societal issues, the impact of social media on our generation, and the internal battle of pretending to be okay when you’re not. Ultimately, we aim to explore and encourage the courage it takes to embrace one’s true self.”
We’ve not interviewed too many bands from Greece, only bringing you three Greek bands in seven years before today. So we asked Konstantina for her thoughts on their local scene, and she told us: “The Greek metal scene is dynamic and diverse, boasting a range of subgenres and passionate fan bases. Bands like Rotting Christ have achieved international recognition, blending black metal elements with Greek folklore.
“Septicflesh is another prominent name, known for their symphonic death metal sound. The scene continues to evolve, with emerging bands exploring various styles, contributing to Greece’s rich musical tapestry.”
There’s plenty more to come from Still Dusk, including the band’s debut album that they’re not able to disclose too much information about yet.
But Konstantina adds: “Supporting local bands is more than music; it’s a powerful investment in your community’s creativity and passion. By attending shows, buying merchandise, or spreading the word, you become a crucial part of their journey. Your support fuels dreams, fosters talent, and ensures that unique voices are heard. Embrace the magic of local music—be a force that propels artists forward and helps your community thrive. Keep supporting and don’t forget #dusk_is_coming.”
