Dallas Fort Worth newcomers Safe In The Dark aim to celebrate the weirdness that exists in all of us, with a theatrical flair engaging emo-punk sound that they describe as “silly, sexy and spooky.”
The band first started up back in February by Parker Sims and three new friends, who all accidentally kickstarted their careers. Parker went away and worked on the project a little more and recruited new members, who are equally committed to the goal of, in Parker’s words, “making music that’s fun to make and fun to listen to.”
On the sound, they’ve honed since, Parker told us: “I describe the sound like if Green Day, Blink 182, Tally Hall and Lemon Demon Got together and decided to conjure the spirits of Ludo.”
Our first taste of this is Safe In The Dark’s debut single You Were Blocked For A Reason, which was released at the end of last month. It opens up with a fun guitar lick over lively drums and supporting guitars, which drops into engaging punky vocals supported by lively guitars. A little pause and a “Woo!” leads into the lines “I’m finally over you, Now you’re trying to get under me, You found someone new, Does he know what you’re up to?” which feeds into catchy repeats of “What you up to, Does he know what you get up to?”
A cool little guitar solo and driving drums drop into a verse, and a funky synth joins in as it feeds into another chorus. The pace slows down before setting up a final blast of the chorus.
On the track, Parker told us: “It feels amazing, I’ve never been so proud of a project before. Everyone seems to be really enjoying it and that makes me feel even more encouraged to do more music. It’s a really fun song to jump to. And honestly, the chorus has gotten stuck in literally everyone’s head at this point.” Give it a listen in the stream here:
The Safe In The Dark sound is largely influenced by punk and emo bands like Green Day and My Chemical Romance, with one specific influence. As Parker explains: “My biggest influence is definitely Ludo. I’ve been a huge fan of that band since literally forever, I even named my band after one of their songs.”
And on what inspires them to write music, Parker added: “I have written a couple of breakup songs. I don’t want that to be everything, my main goal for our vibes are to be songs that make you smile. It’s not necessarily always going to be the best song ever, but it’ll be a fun song! For this one specifically, we were still influenced by Ludo, but also some early Falling In Reverse, Lustra, and Set It Off. Jazz, our lead guitarist/synth player is a massive fan of Set It off and it just blends perfectly with my Ludo obsession.”
We shouldn’t have too long to wait for more Safe In The Dark content to enjoy, with the band currently working on new music. They’ll also have music videos for You Were Blocked For A Reason coming soon, potentially one with a production company and a “silly one” recorded by Parker. They also have plans to get some gigs booked in next year.
And Parker adds: “I guess the main thing I would like people to know is we’re coming, and prepare to have a good time.”
