February New Music Round-Up: JAW, Disconnected, Twisted Faith, ETHMEBB, The Hollowmen Project, Chemical Vision, Ray Of Light & Hemwick

As discussed in a recent article, we recently began discovering new rock and metal bands through music discovery platform Groover. Some bands don’t respond to our requests for interviews, so we’ll likely be doing semi-regular round-ups of new artists we’ve discovered through the site.

This week, we’ve got brand new music from bands in Canada, France, Germany, the UK and the US, so read on and give these new bands a listen.

Jaw – Save Yourself

Yorkshire alt-rock quartet JAW formed in 2023 with the aim of crafting “in your face” choruses contrasted by haunting, dynamic verses. Our latest taste of this the band’s third single Save Yourself, which was released at the end of last month. It opens up with a light guitar lick, before blasting into guitar chords and backing vocals. The pace drops in a laid-back verse that leads into a big catchy chorus before edgy guitars support high-pitched vocals, then it drops back into a mellow verse. A second chorus gives way to a fun instrumental section with chunky guitar hits, which gives way to a final blast of the chorus.

You can follow JAW on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, and check out their music on Spotify and YouTube.

Disconnected – We Carry On

French band Disconnected blend powerful riffs, dark melodies and contrasting screamed and clean vocals in a thrilling modern metal sound. Their latest release, We Carry On, drops straight into a technical riff and heavy drums, which are joined by a sinister synth. Cool little guitar flurries support gruff vocals responding to cleans, which take the lead in a big catchy chorus. The dual vocals return before the darkness builds with a high-pitched guitar line over intense vocals, before another chorus. This time it drops into intense stabbing guitars and drums before a spinning lick drops into light guitars and clean vocals, setting up a big final chorus. This track sets the scene for a new EP and a 23-date European tour, so keep your eye out for Disconnected.

Twisted Faith – Dysregulation

Montreal’s Twisted Faith offer up oodles of fun in a highly entertaining fusion of hard rock and glam rock. The band just released their third single Dysregulation, which opens up with chugging guitars that drop into fun chords over spoken vocals and a squeal of “Let’s go.” It drops into mellow vocals and a light guitar lick, picking up pace with engaging vocals then slowing down again with spoken vocals. It picks up again with engaging vocals giving away to a meandering guitar lick feeding into a fun little solo, setting up a final chorus.

Ethmebb – J’ai deman…

Heading back to France brings us to the dramatic, diverse progressive metal meets symphonic and death metal sound of ETHMEBB, who growl their way through themes involving “dragons, crappy wizards and teleportation.” Te band sent us J’ai deman… the opening track from their second album Allo Babar et les Caramboleurs, which was released last month. Horns and fast-paced drums begin a dramatic intro that continues into an intense verse led by gruff vocals, then spoken, growled and wild high-pitched vocals combine in a powerful chorus. Rapped vocals take over in a lively verse, which ends with a cry of “motherfucker” then a funky guitar solo, which gives way to wild screamed vocals and dramatic instrumentals. And an organ creeps in alongside a guitar lick and choral vocals to bring the track to a conclusion. We’re definitely intrigued by the randomness of this band, and their album is brilliantly bonkers.

You can follow Ethmebb on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, and check out their music on Spotify, Bandcamp and YouTube.

The Hollowmen Project – Man In Black

American rockers The Hollowmen Project describe their track Man In Black as “just one of a few of the greatest songs ever written for the rock genre.” We suspect they’re being a little bit tongue-in-cheek, but it’s certainly entertaining and catchy. The track opens up with drum hits then light guitars support some fun “lah-dee-dah” vocals and wails that lead into an engaging verse that starts with the line “Well there once was a man named doesn’t matter, Whose convictions were burnt to the core.” The fun opening vocals return alongside a funky little guitar lick, feeding into another entertaining verse. Man In Black comes from The Hollowmen Project’s second EP Manic Episodes, which was released last month.

Chemical Vision – Artificial

Forward-thinking American band Chemical Vision is “on a mission to reshape music for the digital age.” The band fuses rock and metal with elements of EDM in a bid to break free from genre constraints and the lead way in musical innovation.

Our latest taste of this is Artificial, which was released last month. It starts with a high-pitched noise and crunchy drums that intensify with beeps and crushing guitars under engaging vocals. A repeating electronic noise supports dual vocals through the chorus, which gives way to piercing guitars and all manner of electronic sounds in another verse and chorus. Out of nowhere, it spins into rapped vocals with intense electronic noises, which give way to wild screamed vocals and booming guitars bringing the track to a powerful conclusion.

You can follow Chemical Vision on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and TikTok, and check out their music on Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube.

Ray Of Light

German-British band Ray Of Light have crafted an old-school hard rock sound led by deliciously engaging vocals. The band sent us City Of Angels from their debut album Salute, which was released last week. It starts with a little drum roll setting up a guitar lick that flows into an engaging verse supported by stabbing guitars and a big singalong chorus that ends with a cry of “gotta keep the dream alive.” A second chorus continues with more intense vocals that give way to a cool guitar solo, and the pace drops before building up to a big final blast of the chorus.

You can follow Ray Of Light on Facebook, and check out their music on Spotify, Deezer and YouTube.

Hemwick – Acedia

We don’t tend to receive a lot of instrumental music so we’re ending on a high with the progressive, experimental metal sound of Ogden, Utah’s Hemwick. The band sent us Acedia from the four-track EP of the same name, which was released last March. It opens up with rolling drums that continue under wild guitars then stabbing rhythmic guitar and bass supported by more heavy drums and cymbals. The drums again take centre stage in a brief guitar lull, before a cool diving riff, then more big rhythmic instrumentals with some wild electronic noises. It goes darker with delicious chugging guitars, before a moment of calm reflection with mellow guitars. The drums gradually intensify, joined by a cool screeching guitar, contrasted by a dreamy guitar response bringing the track to a calm conclusion.

On the track, the band said: “Acedia features an aggressive arrangement filled with complex rhythms that deliver a visceral punch, while hauntingly somber melodies weave seamlessly throughout. This track is a true reflection of our artistic vision, balancing aggression with beauty, and encapsulating the essence of what Acedia represents.”

You can follow Hemwick on Facebook and Instagram, and check out their music on Spotify, Bandcamp, Apple Music and YouTube.
