German studio project Mostly Under 3 combines classic rock power with modern production, with a heavy focus on groove and atmospheric soundscapes.
The duo of Tom Gierend and Thomas Gölden, based in Grafschaft, in the district of Ahrweiler, Rheinland-Pfalz in western Germany, first met at a friend’s birthday party 10 years ago. That chance meeting sparked a long-term musical partnership, which began with a cover band that disbanded during the pandemic. Tom began composing original material, consciously steering clear of being tied to a single genre, before bringing Thomas on board to complete the project.
Tom is very much the creative core of the project, leading the way on guitar, keyboard, vocals and songwriting, as well as mixing, mastering and video production. Thomas enhances the arrangements with guitar, keyboards, saxophone and a refined musical sensitivity.
Our latest taste of this is their new single One Mile Can Be A Long Way, which was released last month. It opens up with moody instrumentals that are enhanced by an organ line that’s joined by heavier guitars and continues through a big opening verse. That flows into a chorus of “One mile can be a long way, A long way to go, One mile can be a long way, If you don’t see the way.” The pace slows, before kicking into another moody verse and chorus, which gives way to a funky little organ solo. Cries of “scream, scream” are supported by a little guitar flurry teeing up a big final blast of the chorus.
On the track, they told us: “One Mile Can Be A Long Way was inspired by the serious illness of a close family member – resonating deeply with listeners who recognise their own stories within the song’s emotional core.”
That’s the latest in a series of singles over the last two years, including their lively debut track Bad Dreams Good Kisses, the delicious, far more laid-back Memories, and the more recent catchy Back To Zero and King Of The Madmen, which features a cool saxophone solo.
The Mostly Under 3 sound has been inspired by the music that shaped Tom and Thomas’ youth, including the likes of Deep Purple, Whitesnake, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Saga, Toto and Pink Floyd.
And on what inspires them to write music, they told us: “These songs capture the authentic rock identity of the project. Additional guest vocalists have contributed to songs such as Out Of The Dark, Small Things and Run.
“Lyrically, Mostly Under 3 does not shy away from the pressing issues of our time. Many of our songs address personal and societal challenges, reflecting a thoughtful and often emotional perspective. In essence, it’s a studio project born out of passion, creativity, and a deep love for music that grooves, moves, and connects.”
