French-Japanese band Re:Instinct blend different musical and cultural backgrounds and influences in a powerful but engaging metal sound that they describe as “intense, emotional and honest.”
The band is formed of France-based vocalist Mody Ptd, along with brothers Kohei and Keisuke Kobotoa, the composer and guitarist living in Switzerland and Tokyo respectively, and bassist and sound engineer JereM, who also lives in France. Re:Instinct was born out of digital exchanges, long-distance writing sessions and, in Mody’s words: “A mutual obsession with emotional storytelling in music. What started as a collaboration naturally evolved into a band.”
And on the sound they’ve honed, Mody told us: “Re:Instinct blends modern J-rock energy with Western alternative and metal influences. There’s a strong focus on atmosphere and melody, emotional and powerful vocals. If you like bands emotionally-driven and unafraid of contrast, our sound will probably speak to you.”
Our first taste of this is their debut single SILENCE INTO SOUND, which was released earlier this month. The track dives straight into Mody’s engaging vocals, which initially hint at the potential for harsh screams but flow into delicious Japanese vocals over backing vocals, guitars and stabbing strings. The screams eventually come, intersecting with spoken vocals and giving way to light vocals that increase in intensity.
The pace slows before a brief scream kicks it back into life with a big chorus. That gives way to harsh vocals over stabbing guitars and interesting backing instrumentals, before the pace drops. Light vocals come in alongside backing strings, and gradually build to a crescendo that ushers in a big guitar solo. That tees up a big final blast of the chorus with dual vocals bringing the track to a powerful conclusion.
On the track, Mody said: “The reception of our debut single has been deeply encouraging. We’ve had a lot of feedback about how the song resonates emotionally, especially with listeners who connect to themes of inner conflict and release.
“SILENCE INTO SOUND is about the moment when everything you’ve been holding back finally breaks through. Musically, it moves between calm verses, soaring melodies, and powerful choruses. If you enjoy songs that build tension and then hit hard, this track is a good entry point into the Re:Instinct universe.”
Re:Instinct’s sound is heavily influenced by artists who create strong emotional identity through their music. Mody’s vocals are inspired by bands like COLDRAIN, Survive Said The Prophet, Twenty One Pilots, PALEDUSK, as well as artists like Poppy, Ado and Kenshi Yonezu. While guitarist Keisuke is big into bands like X JAPAN, Children of Bodom, Slipknot and All That Remains, with metal and J-pop shaping his approach to melody and heaviness.
Kohei is heavily influenced by ELLEGARDEN, X JAPAN, Joe Hisaishi, Ringo Sheena, Hikaru Utada, John Mayer and more. And JereM has very spontaneous tastes, including the likes of Tatsuya Kitani, Ado, PALEDUSK, COLDRAIN and Green Day.
On what inspires them to write music, Mody explains: “Our writing is driven by instinctive emotions rather than concepts. We often explore themes like inner struggle, identity, silence, but also hope. We want to give people hope, motivation and make them smile in dark times. A lot of our inspiration comes from personal experiences, but also from stories.”
SILENCE INTO SOUND is just the beginning for Re:Instinct and we’re excited to hear what else they have coming our way. The band is already working on new material, with more releases scheduled through 2026 and plans to play live shows and take on international opportunities on the horizon.
And Mody added: “If our music reaches you, it’s because you felt something in it. That connection is what matters most to us. We’re just getting started, and this is only the first chapter.”
