Introducing: Bleach the Sky

Boston band Bleach The Sky take us on a journey back to the late 90s and early 2000s alt-rock with their own twist of modern dynamics in a sound that they describe as “catchy, nostalgic and dynamic.”

The trio of Zach Kraft (vocals and guitar), Rahul Srinivasan (drums) and Alex Tighe (bass) met via Craigslist and released their debut single Burn Up in 2019. Their debut EP Acid Girl followed the next year and, after a series of singles, they released follow-up EP Wash Away in March.

On the sound they’ve crafted in that time, the band told us: “I’d say catchy and that it hits the sweet spot, hovering back and forth between the aggressive and hazy ends of nostalgic alt rock, all the while still finding a way to feel modern at the same time.”

From the EP, the band sent us the second track Tail Light, which opens up with atmospheric guitars under echoey vocals and building drums. It kicks into a big smash of guitars, before the pace drops with light guitars leading us into an almost shoegazey mellow verse. That flows into a big catchy chorus with driving guitars and drums pushing things forward, before another calm verse. A second chorus extends with a piercing guitar lick under engaging vocals and powerful rolling drums, which flows into a final blast of the chorus.

That follows the EP’s lead single GIN, which opens things up with a very 90s grunge meets noise rock vibe. And there’s plenty more to follow with the edgy Deadbolt, the catchy Disguise and the lively and feisty final track Into the End.

On the EP, the band told us: “We’re stoked – it’s been three years since we released new music. It’s entirely different. We’ve reshaped our writing process over the years and the result is a much fuller and just an overall sonically pleasing sound. You’re starting to hear more influences from different rock genres from grunge and post hardcore to emo to some shoegaze as well.

“This is the best music we’ve put out by far. Every track is a result of all our best ideas written over the past three years. There were many aspects of other songs that didn’t make it that were distilled down into the five tracks.”

The Bleach The Sky sound draws inspiration from a wide range of sounds and bands, including the likes of Bush, Deftones, Hum, Sunny Day Real Estate, Radiohead, Teenage Wrist, Enumclaw, Jimmy Eat World, Swervedriver, Incubus, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Oasis. And on what inspires them to write music, the band simply states: “Isolation, confrontation, resilience, introspection.”

The band has gigs planned across the US east coast, starting in the Spring, before getting back to writing more music. They’ve also released a short rock documentary that serves as a “making of” video, along with more information about the band’s history, which you can check out via the link below.
