New Band of the Week: Dethrüt

Surrey duo Dethrüt have crafted a vicious nu-metalcore sound with elements of deathcore, which they describe as “chaotic, pissed, and (mostly) tongue-in-cheek.”

The duo of Rob and Sam, who hail from Camberley, met during primary school, became friends and bonded over music during secondary school. They eventually played in bands together, predominantly cover bands with a lean towards pop-punk with a bit of A Day To Remember influence, before losing touch for 10 years. They randomly reconnected and formed a new band, which didn’t work out due to various commitments. But Rob and Sam went it alone as a two-piece, using their shared passion for modern metal to continue making music together.

On the sound they’ve honed over the years, Sam told us: “I actually find it hard to describe it myself sometimes. We hope to bring something for everyone. We label ourselves nu-metalcore, but we definitely have influences of deathcore scattered in there too. We like the idea of being predictable enough that we can give you something to latch onto, but also throwing enough curveballs in there to keep it fresh and interesting. But mostly, of course, we’re interested in bringing the heavies!”

Our first taste of this is the duo’s debut EP PANACEA, which was released in February and from which they sent us BLOODRUSH. The track opens up with drawn out guitars over rolling drums, joined by a stabbing riff that continues over heavier drums. That gives way to wild guitars under intense screamed vocals, which gives way to big stabbing guitars and powerful drums. The vocals intensify with big guttural screams, which develops into intense dual vocals before stabbing guitars and an eerie distant synth sound under more intense guitars. That builds up to a final chorus that brings the song to an end on a high.

On the track, Rob said: “(This has) certainly been the one so far that’s had the most reach for us, which is cool too! Lyrically, it’s quite on the nose compared to others in the bank, but it’s more or less about battling your anxieties and inner battles head-on, and not pushing your feelings down, but through the eyes of someone literally being chased through a building by an entity or something. Human or not – it’s up to the listener!”

And Sam added: “This quickly became one of our favourite songs to date! Musically, we wanted it to stem from simple riff that had some ways to develop more and more as the song goes on, with a few nasty breakdowns chucked in there. Jackson Rose also features on it – he was really supportive of us and the song, and his bit really is killer!”

There’s plenty more metal intensity throughout the EP, opening up with the electronic intro to the vicious intro track (A)WAKE. LA MORT // D’AMOUR begins with a huge guttural scream before kicking into a powerful combo of wild vocals and driving guitars and drums, before a chorus ends with a wild scream. EMPTY combines engaging guitars and a blend of clean and screamed vocals, before the powerful MONSTER and the relentless final track WHEN CAN I BREATHE brings the EP to a fittingly intense conclusion.

The Dethrüt sound draws on a wide range of influences, including the guitar work of Australian band Diamond Construct and the electronic stylings of Darko US, as well as the likes of Periphery and Veil of Maya.

And on what inspires them to write music, Sam tells us: “Both of us have had wanted to scratch this particular itch for a long time. I’ve been writing metal music for years now, but only for myself and never for any particular project. I’ve watched how the scene has changed over the last decade, and have adapted my writing style as I went. But what I always wanted was an outlet for this music, and the time finally seemed right to have a go at finding that.”

And Rob added: “Lyrically, I guess I like to have a bit of fun building characters and stories around experiences i’ve been through myself or witnessed others go through but usually indirectly. I can be quite a closed book as a general rule, so the world building element helps me get into the zone or mind of the characters being portrayed and develop a narrative and maybe face some of my own insecurities through doing so.

MONSTER is a good example – on the surface, it’s about someone getting away with a murder and taunting the police / loved ones. Kinda like how in a lot of true crime, the perpetrator usually throws themselves in with the help party because they think it makes them look less guilty and can keep one step ahead. The character is a definitive, deranged psychopath – hence the maniacal laughing throughout the song… but it’s actually just about moving on with your life after tragedy, break up, or something like that (whatever the listener wants to relate it to really) and being super happy about the fact that they’ve made it through the other side. It’s a positive message delivered through a grizzly horror story, I guess!  That’s how I allow myself to open up & get creative. It’s a therapy of sorts.”

The duo are busy working on refining their sound and the bits of their debut EP that they felt worked best. They just released a cover of Linkin Park’s Papercut, and will have more on the way ahead of getting to work recording their second EP. They’re also keen to play live shows if they can find a backing band to help them split frontman duties effectively.

And Sam added: “We didn’t necessarily come onto the scene to change the game, reinvent the wheel or anything like that. We’re just a couple of guys who finally have the chance to work together on something we’re passionate about, and want to put out good quality music that others can appreciate. But ultimately, we want to release music that WE would want to listen to ourselves. We really do believe in what we’re putting together, and we hope people come along with us for the ride. We just want to have fun!”
