New Band of the Week: Beige

They may be Beige by name but there’s nothing beige about the infectious fuzzy goodness of the Brighton rockers who describe their sound as “fuzzy noisy loudness.”

Beige could easily have never got going at all, as the first time guitarist Tom messaged bassist Jack about starting a band project he was rudely turned down. However, Tom and vocalist Leanna got the project up and running and soon brought Jack back into the fold (we presume grovelling on hands and knees). They tried and tested a few drummers before finally settling on Conor, of which they say: “and the curse was complete *abrupt thunder and lightning*.”

They used the pandemic as an extended songwriting session before making up for lost time with a slew of singles and gigs. And on the sound the quartet have honed since, Jack explains: “”A load of old racket. A huge sound influenced by grunge, stoner rock and alt-rock.”

We chatted to the band around the release of their fantastic latest single Greater Expectations, which starts out with slow stabbing guitars joined by a building noise. It bursts into life with heavy guitars and driving drums that continue under a delicious little lick.

The pace drops as Leanna takes over with dual vocals through the verse, then explodes into a powerful grungey chorus. It drops back into another light verse and a second chorus gives way to a repeating lick that continues into a naughty riff under a fun little guitar solo. That builds up to a huge final rendition of the chorus that finishes on a big held note, before a little guitar lick brings the track to a close.

On the track’s release, Jack told us: “The reception has been good! Lots of listens and shares which we’re chuffed about. It has also been picked up by BBC Introducing which is great. If you haven’t heard it yet, it’s Beige but tender but still loud. It’s a ballad with bravado. Enjoy!” Give it a listen here:

The band has built up an impressive black catalogue of stoner rock-infused fuzzy rock. That includes the funky Master Blaster and a personal favourite Sleep, which starts with a funky meandering bassline that’s joined by a trippy little guitar lick and drops into laid-back vocals. It suddenly bursts into an intense chorus led by huge catchy vocals. Check it out here:

There’s also debut single Something Real, which opens up with chunky guitars under Leanna’s engaging vocals that develops into an echoey chorus.

Beige draw influence from stoner rock and desert rock and love events like Desertfest London. While their favourite bands include the likes of Kyuss, Elder, Elephant Tree and Queens of the Stone Age, as well as alt-rock and grunge bands like Tigercub, Snayx and Kid Kapichi.

And on what inspires them to write music, Jack tells us: “Leanna writes all the lyrics so you may hear the odd song about her disability, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. Other than that, good times, bad times, good people and bad people.”

Beige had a busy year of gigging around the south of the UK, and will be playing Icebreaker Festival in Southsea in February and Entombed Festival in Hastings in March. and promise us new music is in the mix so, in Jack’s words “expect new noise for 2023!”

You can follow Beige on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, and check out their music on Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube.
